TURNOVER OF THE TULA PROVINCE FAIRS IN XIX – EARLY XX CENTURIES

The aim of the article is to investigate the turnover of the Tula province fairs for the period of the first third of the XIX through the beginning of the XX century. Carrying out the analysis of turnover of the Tula province fairs in the XIX – early XX centuries, the author identifies the level of fair trade development of the province, determines its role in the economic development of the province and provides the answer to the question whether the Tula province was the center of the large-scale wholesale trade in the Central Russia. The author specifies the downcycles and prosperity phases of the province fairs turnover in the process of the development of the Tula province fair trade in the XIX – early XX centuries. The author identifies the fairs with the most significant trade turnover, leaders and “outsiders” among the towns and districts of the province based on the quantity of the brought and realized goods. From the analysis of trade turnover of city and rural fairs of the Tula province the author elicits that in the XIX – the beginning of the XX centuries during progress of fair trade of the Tula province within the specified time range the periods of recession and rise of provincial fairs turnover were observed. The increase of the number of fairs and their turnover makes it evident that fairs take on enormous importance in the Tula province economic development but so far as retail and small retail trade was typical for the majority of the fairs judging by the level of the commercial exchange, the Tula province was not the large-scale wholesale trade center in the Central Russia.
