Виноградов А.В.
Widespread using of forest resources and it’s export to another regions of Russia became a major focus of economic development of the Kazan region already in the 18th century. Urbanization processes and formation of a large enterprises in 19th century has contributed to growth of the need for forest resources and wide deforestation of the region. The most active deforestation took place in a districts located on the banks of major rivers (the Volga and the Kama). Drastic reduction of forested areas, the extent of which is discussed in the article caused a number of negative consequences of environmental character. On deforested areas hydrosphere has been significantly degraded, the number of natural reservoirs and biological species has been decreased, climatic fluctuation have become more pronounced. Those environmental issues were one of the prerequisites of the poor harvest and the famine in 1891-1892’s.
