VEXILLOLOGICAL CULTURE IN RUSSIAN UNIVERSITIES IN THE CONTEXT OF INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY (BY THE EXAMPLE OF NATINAL RESEARCH TOMSK POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY)

The article considers basic reasons and performance of low vexillological culture in Russia: poor awareness of a Russian national flag colours order, exhibition of inverted flags, widespread of flags which design lacks legal rationale and do not correspond with attributed functions. Objective reasons for low culture are the absence of vexillological traditions in the USSR and so called “clip thinking”, while low general cultural level of Russian population is considered as subjective reason. The author sets out the necessity for vexillological culture increase as an element of international cooperation in Russian universities. The article focuses on three basic motives for using other states flag in universities: by international students as a means of self- presentation; upon the initiative of university administration to demonstrate respect and denote international status of an event; to hold activities with official international participation. The author describes research on recognizability of international flags which was conducted among students and staff members and drew the conclusion on low flag awareness.
