PECULIARITIES OF THE RELATIONSHIPS OF BENVENUTO CELLINI AND THE DUKE OF FLORENCE, COSIMO DE MEDICI

The article brings up the question of the relationship of the Florentine sculptor and jeweller Benvenuto Cellini with Duke Cosimo de Medici. The author pays attention to the problem of mismatch of artist’s claims who seeks for decent material reward for his talent and assessment of its capacities by the Duke. It is shown that the work for the court and maecenas didn’t always contribute to the crystallization of a sense of dignity and exclusivity of a creative personality: they were quite often restricted. Analyzing the sources, the author comes to the conclusion that the reason of that was the changing economic, social and political situation in Florence in the second half of the sixteenth century, when the economy was in crisis, undivided authority of the monarch replaced the Republic, ideals of the Renaissance were fading away.
