IMAGE OF A WOMAN IN SMALL GENRES OF OSSETIAN FOLKLORE (THE ETHNOGRAPHIC ASPECT)

The article presents the image of a woman in the Ossetian proverbs and sayings. It is an attempt of ethnographic research of verbal constructions which include the common Ossetian curses and good wishes, associated with a woman. This analysis carried out on the basis of archival and published folk sources, reveals gender, age and interfamily relationships of Ossetian people reflected in proverbs and sayings. The study of the woman image in the identified types of small genres of folklore significantly completes the idea of the various sides of Ossetian women daily life from birth to old age, of their status in the traditional Ossetian society. The proverbs and sayings defining the image of a woman reflect some peculiar social and age status, such as one of a mother, daughter-in-law and the oldest woman – æfsin, completing them by moral and ethical qualities typical of the traditional image of an Ossetian woman.
