CURRENT STAGE OF RESEARCH OF GOLDEN HORDE TOWNS IN THE LOWER VOLGA REGION (THE MIDDLE OF XX CENTURY – EARLY XXI CENTURY)

The main trends of historico-archaeological research of the Lower Volga Golden Horde towns outlined in recent decades and the achievements of scientists in this field are considered in the article. Such medieval living monuments as the Selitrennoye, Tzarevskoye, Metchetnoye, Vodianskoye and Uvekskoye ancient settlements are the object of the research in this stage. The key problems raised by the scientists of this period are overviewed in the article. The solution of the problems became possible due to the goal-seeking archaeological research of medieval ancient settlements and the extensive and various material for analysis received in excavations. Large-scale (in late XX century) and systematic (between XX–XXI centuries) researches of central and regional archaeological expeditions set up a base for forming current approaches in the study of the Lower Volga Golden Horde towns. There’s a growing tendency nowadays which is based on the analysis of the archaeological materials obtained in the excavations during the previous periods of the Lower Volga ancient settlements study. Moreover, the complications connected with the current study of medieval ancient settlements are analyzed in the article.
