TRADITIONS OF EASTERN CALLIGRAPHY IN ARABIC LITHOGRAPHIC BOOK OF DAGHESTAN IN THE BEGINNING OF XX CENTURY

The present article is devoted to studying of a unique printed heritage in the Arabian language – the lithographies issued in the beginning of 20th century in printing houses of Daghestan. Quality of lithography depend on skill of the copyists; the author lists most well-known of them. Though work of the Daghestan calligraphers has been subordinated to the general canons of decoration kept since times of the Middle Ages, there were appeared many new features in lithographic printed book created with “naskh” handwriting. The lithographic type of printing was popular in Daghestan because of powerful manuscript traditions here. The old-printed lithographic books parallel with the local Arabic manuscripts have great importance for studying the cultural heritage of the Daghestan people. The article was written on basis of the Manuscript Fund materials of the Institute of History, Archeology and Ethnography of the Daghestan Scientific Center, Russian Science Academy, with the usage of archaeographic materials.
