ETHNIC CULTURES OF WILD-LIFE USE AND ALTAI-SAYAN ECOREGION PROTECTED NATURAL AREAS: THE ISSUES OF CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Traditional wild-life issues in the context of sustainable development is one of the most urgent, but at the same time, embarrassing experiences, needs to be examined with the support of the science data . The purpose of the article is to assess the experience gained in such a field by protected areas of Altai-Sayan ecoregion, to note the best practices for effective interaction between nature reserves, national parks and nature parks on the one hand and local communities of indigenous people with another. Firstly published materials were obtained by the author in the framework of the project named “Biodiversity conservation in the Russian portion of the Altai-Sayan ecoregion”, which was supported by United Nations Development Program and Global Environmental Facility. The author selected the most acute problems in the relations between local indigenous groups and environmental services representatives. The effective ways to address them were also shown. In the essence of problems discussed in the article, the author concludes that it is possibly to replicate the positive experience of regional protected areas managing the traditional practices of indigenous wildlife-use outside the Altai-Sayan mountain country.
