ANTIQUE PHENOMENON OF THE DIVIDED OSSETIAN PEOPLE: THE SOURCES AND THE FACTORS OF A SEPARATED

The article deals with the historic and ethnological aspect of the ethnic self-consciousness- and ethnic self- identification of North and South Ossetians on the basis of researches carried out with the help of psychological methods. Different conditions of nature management, household cultural types, cultural influences predetermined certain discrepancy of ethnic values though only in the level of dynamic, i.e. changeable part of ethnic consciousness. However the basic value orientations of the separated Ossetians almost do not differ. Values, their hierarchy, means of their symbolization go back to the people’s cultural fund and are significant factors of North and South Ossetian’s ethnic self-identification. The ethnic (later national) identity works enough for a very long time. Being a generalization of the entire ethnic history of the people and all the components of its generators, ethnic identity acquires a certain independence, and can be fully maintained in the event of continued division of the people.
